University of Calgary students officially warned over anti-abortion display

From the Star:

CALGARY—Letters of warning have been issued to several members of an anti-abortion group for a display they put on at the University of Calgary last month.

Eight students who are members of Campus Pro-Life have been found guilty of non-academic misconduct following closed-door meetings with a university official.

The university says the students, who had been facing expulsion, failed to comply with security requests and could face harsher penalties in the future if they don’t comply with regulations.

The U of C has said the issue does not surround the students’ opinions, but their failure to comply with requests to ensure the safety of students.

It’s a shame that the University of Calgary doesn’t have the same degree of concern for the security and safety of the unborn. The signs in question are revolting – as intended, presumably – but the only threat they present is to the equanimity of pro-abortionists.

  1. I agree with the University on this one. Those signs are revolting and completely over the top, and I don’t think that they accomplish much. The sign holders would be better off spending their time volunteering at a crisis pregnancy centre.

  2. A typical tactic of the fascists. Control any and all messages that are to be given to the public. Shut down and silence those who oppose you.
The “over the top” aspect of these posters is a side issue. The real issue is that these students have had their Canadian Constitution Right to Freedom of Expression suppressed!

  3. Freedom of expression is not an unlimited right. Those posters are obscene, and I think that the university was within its rights to forbid them. The students weren’t forbidden from protesting – they could have used different signs. There are pictures from 3d ultrasounds that are beautiful, that would have made the same point.

    • Hello Kate,
Perhaps the obscenity is the message. If so, than beautiful ultrasound pictures would not have been effective at conveying the intended message.
I for one look at it this way. The horror of murdering babies is far far worse than all of those posters combined.

  4. Perhaps. Have you actually seen one of these demonstrations? I drove past one of those demonstrations in Ottawa once. The signs were huge – at least four feet long, each one took one person to hold it, and they had to brace themselves. I had two young children in the car at the time. The signs are obscene, and I don’t think young children should be exposed to them. I don’t think these people are helping the anti abortion cause at all, and I don’t want those images lodged in my mind, thank you very much.

    • But which is worse? Having those images lodged in your mind and having your children exposed to them, or that countless babies have been murdered for the most shelfish of reasons?

If these demonstrations are not appropriate, than what do you suggest be done instead? Everything else that has been tried so far has failed, so I request you suggest something that has not already been tried.

  5. Support crisis pregnancy centres. There is never going to be a political solution, at least not in Canada. The political will to end abortion simply isn’t there. There are crisis pregnancy centres all over the country. The centre in Ottawa does counseling; supplies baby things; has volunteers who will actually go to the hospital with a woman who is about to give birth. Practical support for women who are considering abortions does far more than obscene posters on a streetcorner.

  6. I don’t think all women who have abortions are selfish. Many are young, and frightened, and don’t think they have any other choice.
