Church of England bans clergy from BNP and National Front

Short of doing something both heinous and illegal, it is almost impossible for a Church of England vicar to be defrocked; until now. Vicars who join either the BNP or National Front political party will be sacked. There is little doubt that both parties are a blot on the landscape of British politics – but, then, so is the atheistic Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) and there is nothing preventing a vicar joining that party; in fact, Rowan Williams would probably have approved.

The reason given for the prohibition is that the parties are “incompatible with the teaching of the Church of England”, as if all the others are compatible. Come to think of it, a male vicar marrying another man is incompatible with church teaching, too, but the vicar in question is still employed.

Once again, the church of tolerance and diversity demonstrates that it is no more tolerant that the most fundamentalist Biblical literalist it takes such delight in despising.

From here:

Church of England clergy face being defrocked if they are found to be members of the BNP or National Front after bishops ruled that their views are un-Christian and promote the “sin of racism”.

It is the first time Anglican priests have formally been banned from membership of any political party.

Bishops declared the two groups to be “incompatible with the teaching of the Church of England” because of their respective stances on “equality of persons or groups of different races”.

Church of England priests banned from “inappropriate behaviour”

The “unbecoming conduct” in question is membership in the BNP, not sodomy; CofE priests are heaving a collective sigh of relief.

From here:

The Church of England’s ruling synod is expected to ban clergy and church workers from belonging to organisations such as the British National Party.

Clergy would be prevented from expressing support for groups the Church considers racially prejudiced.

Supporters say the proposals could bring more racial diversity to a predominantly white Church clergy.

General Synod members meeting in York will be asked to vote on an amendment to the Church’s disciplinary measures.

This would make it “unbecoming” or “inappropriate” conduct for clergy to be members of a political party with policies and activities declared “incompatible” with Church teaching on race equality.

If you burn a Koran in the UK, you are arrested

From here:

A BNP candidate for next month’s Welsh assembly elections has been charged with a public order offence, after police were passed a video appearing to show him burning a copy of the Koran.

Sion Owens, 41, was named as a party candidate for the South Wales West regional list last week.

He is due to appear at Swansea magistrates’ court on Monday.

Let this be a lesson to anyone feeling inclined to do something unpleasant to a religious text: forget about the Koran, rip up a Bible and shove it in your knickers – it will probably earn you taxpayer funding.

The BNP may be an odious organisation, but I can’t think of a better way for the British legal establishment to give it a boost than by arresting one of its members for burning a Koran in his own garage – that is where the conflagration occurred – under the pretext of a Public Order Offence.

The charge has been withdrawn for the moment because of lack of evidence, although “further proceedings will ensue”. And if they do, it will be a sign to that very select group of rabid, head-hacking Muslim nut cases that they are on the right track and should, at the slightest pretext, keep on hacking.
