St. John’s Shaughnessy has a new website whose first page trumpets that one belief is as good as any other, doubt should be “embraced”, diversity celebrated and – in what is probably a subconscious dig at J.I. Packer – Knowing God is presumptuous. Unsurprisingly, their road is one “less travelled” – particularly by Christians:
St. John’s Shaughnessy is a small but flourishing congregation,
living our calling as Christians by faithfully walking the Anglican path.
Our road is less travelled. We do not claim absolute knowledge of the Divine.
We really welcome everyone and are enriched by the dynamic tension of differing beliefs.
We embrace doubt. Pray hopefully. And celebrate diversity.
Real meanings…
“St. John’s Shaughnessy is a small but flourishing congregation”
We used a law-suit to evict the real congregation and seize their money. My, that’s a lot of money! Now how can we spend it?
“living our calling as Christians by faithfully walking the Anglican path.”
And kicking others off it.
“We do not claim absolute knowledge of the Divine.”
Unlike the law of Canada, and the prices charged by leading attorneys, where we could quote you every clause verbatim. We do claim absolutely to be the true owners of this property. Even though we didn’t build it.
“We really welcome everyone and are enriched by the dynamic tension of differing beliefs.”
Just make sure you bow your head when we pass. And you’re paying, by the way. Don’t forget to pay.
“Our road is less travelled.”
You can say that again. We’re not actually solvent; we just took a lot of money that didn’t belong to us, with the aid of some dodgy lawsuits.
“We embrace doubt.”
Except on property issues.
“Pray hopefully.”
Is there anybody there? (Anybody who thinks that lawsuits are good, that is?)
