The irony is that no one knew what an exceptional leader Rowan Williams was until Justin Welby demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt what an unexceptional leader looks like.

It seems to me that Rowan Williams and Justin Welby are two of a kind. Both weak, distracted, dithering leaders with a bad case of the wobbles. No common sense on display; no practical wisdom; just hand wringing and appeasement. Sorry to be so unenthusiastic about this pair of empty cassocks but they have been so damaging, it seems to me, to the Anglican Communion.
I largely agree that Rowan Williams and Justin Welby are two of a kind. Or, was David’s “exceptional” re Williams in comparison with Welby itself ironic ? A non-ironic, somewhat if not totally appropriate, comparison would be to shift the frame back in time from Williams vs Welby to Carey vs Williams.
I have to confess that, in retrospect, I miss and feel some sympathy for Rowan. Perhaps because his was a bumbling incompetence whereas Welby’s seems to be of a sinister corporate variety.
Also, Rowan is a hairy, sandalled hippy lefty, daft, incoherent and out of touch with reality but not wholly unlovable. Then again, Rowan and I are both Welsh, so perhaps that’s it.
You’re right, of course: neither are much good at leading the Anglican Communion. I probably should have put “exceptional” in inverted commas.
Indeed both were and are apostates and promote the worship of the “god of political expedience” and clearly reject the God of the Scriptures. Neither should ever have been appointed or elected to head ANY Christian Church. In fact, they should never have been consecrated as they never had any intention of fulfilling their vows. They are prepared to worship any god that might seem appropriate at the time.
National bishop of the ELCIC Susan Johnson got one a while back too so Huron is obviously not too fussy about who they hand them out to.
Meanwhile, back in Cultural Marxist UK, the Honorary Professor of Christian Thought (appointed 2017) at Cambridge’s Corpus Christi College remains silent while his Alma Mater shuts its once enlightened ( as in 16c Verbum dat Lucem) doors to a visiting Fellowship to University of Toronto Professor and international Academic, Jordan Peterson; his not having submitted to the language and related tyrannies of “the diversity, inclusivity and equity mob”.
