Global warming and politics

While the truth of anthropogenic global warming obviously doesn’t rest on who believes or doesn’t believe in it, it is noteworthy that belief in global warming tends to align with political allegiance: Liberals are much more likely to be true believers than Conservatives. Even more significant is the fact that very few Liberal supporters have even read articles that question the accuracy of anthropogenic global warming theories.

All of which – regardless of whether the earth is warming or not – confirms that Liberals are…. gullible.

From here:

According to a draft report from the Brookings Institute that compares attitudes to global warming in the U.S. and Canada, an astounding 91% of Canadians who identify themselves as Liberals, and 90% who identify with the Bloc, answer “Yes” when asked: “From what you’ve read and heard, is there solid evidence that the average temperature on Earth has been getting warmer over the past four decades.” Only 6% of Liberals and 9% of Bloc supporters have read and heard that the Earth has not been getting warmer, and just 3% and 1%, respectively, aren’t sure.

Canada’s Conservatives have been exposed to different views: 64% have heard that Earth has been getting warmer and 28% that Earth has not. 8% of Conservatives aren’t sure.

  1. There is evidence for climate change. What there isn’t evidence for is the “people are causing it by our pollution and if we don’t do something about it we are all going to diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie” attitude.

    • No Warren, 80% of the 1200 or so out of a poplulation of 33 million who did the survey believe. Another poll had different results, go figure!

The findings of the Leger Marketing poll conducted less than a week after the end of climate talks in Copenhagen suggest that Canada’s political leaders must more clearly explain their plans for the environment.

But the survey’s regional results highlight the dilemma climate change presents for policymakers.

The highest support for immediate action on greenhouse gases came in Quebec, where almost 70% of those asked said human activity is a key driver of climate change. They want something done now.

In Ontario and British Columbia, 51% felt this way. But in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, 40% or less of those surveyed shared that sense of urgency. Prairie poll participants were also most likely to say human activity had no impact on global climate change, and most likely to say they were confused about the issue.

    • Vatican scientists can still get it wrong.

Climate change experts appointed by the Vatican have called for urgent action to stem damage to the environment.

Among there findings were that the Earth is getting warmer and glaciers are melting at a worrying rate.

The scientists called for urgent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and reductions in methane and other pollutants that warm the air, and for improved observation of mountain glaciers to better track their changes.

However, the panel has supported a scenario publicised by an erroneous 2007 UN report suggesting all glaciers in the Himalayas would melt by 2035.

The suggestion has sparked anger among climate-change sceptics.

Don Easterbrook, an emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University. said: ‘The [U.N.]-predicted warming of one degree between 2000 and the present has not happened – instead it’s gotten cooler.

‘As a result, some glaciers in the Himalayas have begun advancing, and glaciers in Alaska, Norway, and South America have also begun to re-advance,’ he told foxnews.com.

      • Of course they can. So can those who think it’s just a big elaborate hoax. There are lots of closed minds on both sides – and I suspect that the vast majority of people who express a strong opinion have only the vaguest understanding of the science involved (and no interest in objectively considering new evidence).

  2. Warren: The big problem which why some people are not enlightened is in the bogus title, GLOBAL. Out here in Oilberta that black stuff comes from decayed jungles and dinosaurs. And the Laurentian shield was carved in the last Ice Age. So there you have it, bloody hot and damned cold.

The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) or Medieval Climate Optimum was a time of warm climate in the North Atlantic region, that may also have been related to other climate events around the world during that time, including in China, New Zealand, and other countries lasting from about AD 950–1250. It was followed by a cooler period in the North Atlantic termed the Little Ice Age.

Just how did that happen without Al Gore`s predecessors getting all in a knot.

I realize we have some stewardship issues. I like this quote:

Foisted upon the public by means of giant multi-million dollar PR campaigns and brainwashing mandates that have worked themselves into every sector of society, including education, movies, television the arts and culture, all the attention and funding is being lavished upon a manufactured hoax, peddled with the aid of phony data, as governments prepare to suck what’s left out of the middle class and poor with carbon taxes that do nothing to help the environment, while all the real environmental problems are left in the shadows.

I`m glad I don`t have a government job and can decide my own way. And I actually do more for the environment in my new job than you!
