Fred Hiltz preaches healing and reconciliation at St. John’s, Shaughnessy

From here (page 3):

Archbishop Hiltz started his address by thanking us for giving him the opportunity to worship together and by stating that the SJS community had been very much in his thoughts and prayers over the past few years as we addressed the tensions within the diocese. “We are all in need of healing and reconciliation and I want to acknowledge with deep gratitude your steadfastness to the Anglican Church of Canada, its worldwide mission and loyalty to the work of the Diocese of New Westminster.”

What Hiltz failed to mention is that a number of ANiC trustees are still being sued personally by the Diocese of New Westminster.

The church that brought us the generous pastoral response, holy listening and experiential discernment, is now striving for the apogee of absurdity with healing lawsuits.

  1. I joined St John’s Shaughnessy in 1982 was impressed with the place.

I grew up in nearby Canadian Memorial United on W15th & Burrard in Vancouver.

St John’s Shaughnessy is Granville & Nanton.

Nanton is the equivalent of W 28th ave.

I liked the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada the way they made the bible so alive.

    The atmosphere was alive

    The sermons were alive

Coming from an old line church had problems adjusting and settling in to the PAOC

Taking it to the youth pastor said, ‘you’re good at worship but -there’s nothing here for you-‘

Well do you think he could see into the situation?

We had a Regent College student live in our basement suite.

He was a member of 1st Baptist on Burrard & Nelson.

He was active in the Hobbit House where he played guitar.

He told me about St John’s Shaughnessy Anglican

The place was a growing concern

But since 2002 oh what a mess

I think the whole thing is terrible

We had four services on Sunday at the old location

    7:30am 40 attend

    9am 500 or so

    11am 500 or so

    6:30pm 200 or so

We have the same services at the new location at Oakridge 7 Day Adventist on Baille & W37th between Oak & Cambie

    7:30am 40 or so

    9am 400

    11am 400

    6:30pm 200

About the same give ot take a couple hundred

The legal wrangling going on and on every sunday was overwhelming went on forever

This started at St Paul’s Anglican on Pendrell & Jervis used to be the most evangelical church but the area underwent a number of changes

In the 1980s the Diocese of New West said to me on the phone, ‘St John’s Shaughnessy is the way St Paul’s used to be is closed old fashioned low anglican we are trying not to encourage this’

St John’s reminds me of the PAOC but the diocese doesn’t like it.

Bishop Ingham was the secretary under Primate Michael Peers where they developed a rite to bless same sex unions.

He becomes the priest for St francis in the woods north van.

1972-2002 the diocese of new west discussed blessing same sex unions

The ones growing that was going in favour

It reached a climax in 2002 Synod

As the Bishop said, ‘yes’, some walked out.

He wrote the book ‘Rites for a new age’ is about the Book of Alternative Services, BAS.

St Timothy’s who left St Martin’s NV mentioned how the BAS debunks rather important things.

Then came ‘Mansions of the spirit’ inspired by Hans Kung a liberal theologian living in switzerland who promotes interfaith & John Crossan an former Roman Catholic priest from ireland who doesn’t believe in christ’s bodily resurrection.

  2. I worshipped with the real St. John’s Shaughnessy parish (now called St. John’s Vancouver) up the hill at the Adventist church that morning, at one of their four daily services, while my teenage son joined 100 other teens for youth group.

Samizdat reported last year that St. John’s Shaughnessy attendance is still only 40 per Sunday. The linked report from DNW Topic suggests that this has since fallen to 2, stating “sandwiches and sweets prepared by both the members of our congregation …” [my emphasis]

    🙂

  3. “What Hiltz failed to mention is that a number of ANiC trustees are still being sued personally by the Diocese of New Westminster.” So sad when a leader in the church still doesn’t read the bible – especially the part about not taking other Christians to court.

  4. Not being a servant of God and a follower of Christ he is within his rights to define his theology and power structure.

  5. St John’s Vancouver is doing well true enough with good sermons and bible studies.

    4 services at 1000 persons

    St John’s Shaughnessy Granville & Nanton (W28th)

2 services 30 persons some old members come back

St Matthias & St Luke W49th between Oak & Cambie

1 service I’ve heard 15 persons old members come back

    St Mark’s W4th & Larch

    1 service around 30 dwindling

I’ve also heard that St James is dwindling too

St John’s Vancouver is having a vestry this Thurs 7:30pm

Christ Church is doing ok as is St Mary’s Kerrisdale and I think St Paul’s on Pendrell & Jervis

  6. “I want to acknowledge with deep gratitude your steadfastness to the Anglican Church of Canada”

Next news story will be about the closing & sale of the Shaughnessy church. Wait for it.

  7. St John’s Shaughnessy is known as a the flaghship church

I think that some of the smaller churches will be closed and out up for sale instead of St John’s

The congregations will be moved in there
