Bishop Michael Ingham has retired. The Very Rev. Peter Elliott has taken over Ingham’s administrative duties in the Diocese of New Westminster. I am unsure whether this is a harbinger of Elliott’s eventual installation as the next bishop and he is getting in some practice, whether it means he won’t be bishop and he really is just filling in, or whether it is of no significance at all in the matter of bishopric succession.
I really can’t understand why anyone would want to be the bishop of such a fractious, financially unstable diocese; I suppose the lust for power is blind to such trifles.
From here:
The Very Rev. Peter Elliott, Dean of the Diocese of New Westminster and rector of Christ Church Cathedral became Administrator of the Diocese and took over the day-to-day administrative functions of the Office of the Bishop assisted by Synod Staff. During the month of September and in collaboration with Synod Staff, the Nominations/Search Committee will produce materials both electronic and print to communicate information about the Diocese of New Westminster (Diocesan Profile) to encourage nominations.
I doubt that it matters. The downward history of the diocese will now be written, not in its flatulent press releases, or the succession of its ‘bishops’, but in the annual accounts and legally required financial statements.
It seems that he might just be the next Bishop. He’s been the dean at Christ Church Cathedral for years. But there has to be someone to fill in. Rt Rev Hutchinson was called out of retirement to fill in as Primate. Rev Pike was called out of retirement to be rector at St John’s (Shaughnessy) and Rev Fuller was also called out of retirement to be the present rector of St John’s (Shaughnessy). Diocesan votes are Nov 1 and some at my church feel that Rev John Oaks might be the next Bishop is rector at Holy Trinity on Hemlock & w16th in Vancouver. Or they might get a rather neutral person from England like they did with Rev Fuller.
The electoral synod is on November 30, not November 1
I assume David, that your apparent [and astonishing] lack of wisdom is tongue in cheek, or perhaps you are just ‘litigation shy’ these days.
This is the person, who behind the throne of Ingham, started the ball rolling and caused the schism over homosexuality and attendant issues.
The process of succession is blindly followed and leaves little room for supposition.
That New Westminster is a fractious, unstable diocese is not in doubt; the reason why is more complex than you suggest and not just the fault of the Hiltz, Ingham, Elliott GLBT church agenda.
It takes two to tango, as you very well know.
The Rev John Oaks is not longer priest at Holy Trinity. He took a sabbatical for a year. Then he was offered a one year teaching contract, I think. He is in the States, at Harvard??? Not sure. He still owns a house here in Vancouver. Interesting suggestion, though.
My former Rector John Oakes is studying, not teaching, in the USA at present, has been for nearly two years. Yes, he’s at Harvard now. No, he no longer owns a house in Van, they have rented for some years.
We have what we believe to be a genuinely conservative priest coming to Holy Trinity in February next.
Doubtless there will be a pay increase of some kind.
Never stand between an Anglican cleric and a bucket of money.
Any priest that shows their teeth in their portrait cannot be trusted.
Wha — ?
I assume your referring to dean Peter Elliot smiling with his teeth showing. Well, Elliot has been at Christ Church Cathedral for years is a pretty easy person to get along with too. Whether or not he can be trusted? I think for the most part he’s pretty ok.
