A 17-year old girl who fled from her home, fearing her Muslim parents would kill her for converting to Christianity, must go back to Ohio, a Florida judge ruled Tuesday.

Judge Daniel Dawson ruled Ohio has jurisdiction over the case involving the teen, Rifqa Bary.

Before the girl gets sent back, the judge says he needs immigration papers proving her status in the U.S. and proof from the state of Florida that she can continue her virtual schooling and receive credit in Ohio.

She is expected to be placed in foster care when she returns and will also be provided with psychiatric evaluations. Her parents will also receive psychiatric evaluations.

“If I had stayed in Ohio, I wouldn’t be alive,” she said. “In 150 generations in family, no one has known Jesus. I am the first — imagine the honor in killing me.”

If an attempt is made on this girl’s life, perhaps judge Daniel Dawson will be sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

  1. I’m not too sure Kate. I hope we’ll be able to track what happens to this girl. I’m sure she not fearing for her life for nothing. I hope the judge hasn’t made a mistake.

  2. Well, if the system is anything like the system in Ontario, they won’t know, unless they are granted unsupervised visiting rights. Even then, I’d be surprised if visits took place in the foster home.

  3. An interesting case, and maybe we don’t have all the court rulings re visitation rights. I was a foster parent of teens for many years, and most of my kids were long-term residents with me, not able to go back into their homes for various reasons. All family members knew where they were, even if they had no unsupervised visiting rights. Two had “protective custody”, meaning family members could not arrive without the supervision of child custody personel or the police. I don’t know the age-of-majority in Ohio when she will be an independent person on her own and no longer covered by social services. Here in Ontario, a student could be covered until the age of 21. That may be reduced to 19 now – I’m not sure.

We need to continue to pray for this girl.
